The best pool is at the City Recreation Center, with good hours, a large wading area, slides, other water equipment, and low fees. Two places for horseback riding are Totem Ranch in the high mountain meadows and Rancho Canon Ancho in the cow country along the Pecos River. Ft. Union Drive-In Theater is one of the few remaining operating drive-ins in the country. The movie starting at dusk is for families, while the second feature, after the kids fall asleep in the car, is for grown-ups. Sipapu Lodge is famous as a starter ski area and there is a nearby slope for "tubing" as well. Summertime, Sipapu ski slopes are open for disk golf. Kids will be fascinated with outings to Ft. Union National Monument and to Pecos National Historic Park. Another outing is to the Victory Ranch, the largest alpaca ranch in the Southwest, and best alpaca petting opportunity in the country.
