Things To Do

Fort Union - picture by Bob Stoller

See historic Las Vegas
The Citizens' Committee for Historic Preservation offers virtual tours of historic districts for free and guided tours for a fee. Also available are self-guided brochures about historic Las Vegas and its more than 900 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

Explore Fort Union and the Santa Fe Trail
The ruins and interpretative museum at Fort Union present an overview of life on the frontier and along the Santa Fe Trail. One of the Trail's most important stops was the Las Vegas Plaza.

Go shopping
Shops lining the Plaza and on adjacent Bridge Street are a must for exploring. They offer everything from books and spices, cards and coffee, cowboy boots and collectibles, to antiques, hand-made jewelry and local fine art.

Climb a mountain
A wonderful day hike is to the top of nearby Hermit's Peak, with views of the plains to the east as far as your eyes can see, and of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the west.

Fish
Fish for lake trout at nearby Storrie Lake and Lake McAlister. Or try a mountain stream.

Play golf
Nearby golf courses include a 9-hole course in town, and Pendaries Golf Club, with 18-holes in scenic mountain meadows north of Las Vegas.

Stay Fit
An excellent fitness center and indoor swimming pool are located at the City Recreation Center, where hotel guests are welcome at $3 per visit. Highlands University's all-weather jogging track is five blocks northeast of the Hotel.

Skate at Montezuma Skating Pond
The pond is part of the old ice harvesting system of the Santa Fe Railroad located north of Las Vegas on the Gallinas River. This is a favorite spot for skaters from December through March.

See Mora County
Explore old mills and traditional villages. Ski or play disc golf at Sipapu.

Explore Villanueva Valley
Artist studios, Madison Vineyards and beautiful countryside coexist in the charming Villanueva Valley. Churches and homes reflect early Spanish settlement. Villanueva State Park is a perfect picnic spot.

Visit Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge
Native grassland, cropland, marshes, ponds, timbered canyons and streams provide 8,672 acres of refuge for a variety of migratory birds and wildlife.

Windsurf Storrie Lake State Park
Storrie Lake offers windsurfing, swimming, fishing, canoeing and more.

Soak in natural hot springs
Six miles north of the Plaza Hotel are natural springs of varying temperatures. Use of the pools is free and casual. Relax with a wonderful view of the Montezuma Castle, especially at night when it's lighted.

Enjoy a massage
Las Vegas is home to many skillful practitioners of therapeutic massage, including one who practices right here at the Plaza Hotel!

Get some peace and quiet
In this hustle-bustle world, simply doing nothing can be a challenge! Happily, that's not the case in Las Vegas. Here, you'll find time to slow down and sleep late. You're always invited to do nothing more than relax or read a book in the Plaza Park!

Go Birding
If you really want to increase your sightings, nothing beats an excellent guide.

Tour A Castle
The United World College recently completed a $10,000,000 renovation of the Montezuma Castle, one of the most significant single historic buildings in New Mexico. Consult the events calendar for times of tours.
